Why der, die, and das?

German is one of the few languages where every noun carries a grammatical gender — masculine, feminine, or neuter. Unlike English where "the" covers everything, German uses three different definite articles that must be learned alongside each word.

der
Masculine
  • Hund dog
  • Mann man
  • Tisch table
  • Kaffee coffee
die
Feminine
  • Katze cat
  • Frau woman
  • Schule school
  • Straße street
das
Neuter
  • Auto car
  • Kind child
  • Haus house
  • Wasser water

Word endings that hint at the article

While many articles must be memorized, certain word endings are reliable predictors. These patterns cover a large portion of the German vocabulary.

die Usually feminine
  • -ung — die Wohnung, die Bildung
  • -heit — die Freiheit, die Gesundheit
  • -keit — die Möglichkeit, die Fähigkeit
  • -schaft — die Gesellschaft, die Freundschaft
  • -tion / -sion — die Nation, die Version
  • -ik — die Musik, die Physik
  • -tät — die Qualität, die Universität
das Usually neuter
  • -chen — das Mädchen, das Häuschen
  • -lein — das Büchlein, das Kindlein
  • -ment — das Dokument, das Instrument
  • -nis — das Ergebnis, das Verhältnis
  • -um — das Datum, das Zentrum
  • Ge- (prefix) — das Gebäude, das Gespräch
  • Infinitives as nouns — das Laufen, das Essen
der Usually masculine
  • -er (agent nouns) — der Lehrer, der Fahrer
  • -ling — der Lehrling, der Frühling
  • -ist — der Journalist, der Tourist
  • -or — der Motor, der Doktor
  • Male persons / titles — der Vater, der König
